Penn State women’s volleyball head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley announced on Apr. 6 the hiring of Abby Detering as an assistant coach. Detering, a former All-American setter for the Nittany Lions, comes back to Penn State after four seasons coaching at Rutgers.

The addition of Detering is significant for the program as she brings experience both as a player and a coach. Schumacher-Cawley said, “I am happy to welcome Abby back to Penn State. She is a fantastic addition to our staff, bringing not only a wealth of experience but also a contagious energy that will positively impact our team. Her background and enthusiasm make her exceptionally well-suited for this role, and I am confident she will contribute right away.”

Detering spent three years at Rutgers as an assistant before being promoted to associate head coach for the 2025 season. Last year, Rutgers achieved its highest win total in 13 years and recorded strong offensive statistics during the rally scoring era that began in 2008. The Scarlet Knights posted their highest hitting percentage in this period and ranked among their best marks in kills and assists.

Her work with setters was highlighted by these improvements on offense. In April 2025, Detering received national recognition when she earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s “30 Under 30 Award” honoring top young coaches.

Before joining Rutgers, Detering started her collegiate coaching career at Kent State from 2019-21 where she mentored setter Alex Haffner to consecutive All-Mid-American Conference honors. The Golden Flashes led their conference in hitting percentage during her first season on staff.

Detering graduated from Penn State in 2017 with a degree in communication arts and sciences after serving two seasons as starting setter for the Nittany Lions. She earned honorable mention All-America honors her senior year.

Penn State’s women’s volleyball program remains notable nationally, having qualified for every NCAA Tournament since its inception in 1981.
