Alejandro Bedoya released his prediction for the United States men’s national soccer team roster on May 20, ahead of the official squad announcement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bedoya, who has previously represented the United States in international competition, outlined his choices for all positions as anticipation builds for coach Mauricio Pochettino’s selection. The final roster will be revealed in New York City on May 26.
Reflecting on his own experience with World Cup selections, Bedoya said: “You work so hard to make these teams, and hope you’ve done all you can to merit a roster spot. The sacrifices, the hard work, the ups and downs… these periods aren’t easy.” He emphasized that he expects Pochettino to rely on players familiar with each other and established team culture as they prepare for their opening match against Paraguay on June 12.
Bedoya listed three goalkeepers—Chris Brady (Chicago Fire FC), Matt Freese (New England Revolution), and Matt Turner (New York City FC)—noting that both Freese and Turner could compete for a starting role. In defense, he named eight players including Chris Richards (Crystal Palace) and Tim Ream (Charlotte FC). Midfield selections included Tyler Adams (AFC Bournemouth) and Weston McKennie (Juventus FC), while forwards such as Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) and Folarin Balogun (AS Monaco) were highlighted among six picks. “Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie are two of the first names on the teamsheet. They’re that important for the USMNT, both on the field and emotionally,” Bedoya said.
He also discussed difficult omissions from his predicted list due to form or injury concerns but suggested that familiarity would guide many decisions. As a current Philadelphia Union midfielder in his eleventh season—and a two-time Supporters’ Shield champion—Bedoya brings perspective from within Major League Soccer.according to the official website, Philadelphia Union operates as a professional soccer team in Major League Soccer with achievements including winning the Supporters’ Shield in 2020. The club plays at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania—a stadium complex featuring training facilities designed specifically for soccer.
The final U.S. squad will be confirmed soon as excitement grows around hosting this major international tournament.
