Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter pitched in front of family and friends at loanDepot park on May 2, but struggled with command in a 4-0 loss to the Marlins that ended Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak under interim manager Don Mattingly. Painter allowed seven hits, three runs, and three walks while striking out seven over five innings.

The game was significant for Painter, who grew up in South Florida and was pitching at the stadium for the first time. Despite generating mostly weak contact early on, he ran into trouble by loading the bases in both the second and third innings. “They’ve been close,” Painter said after the game. “Today, I just shot myself in the foot.” He explained that his tempo felt rushed: “I think it was pretty up-tempo, pretty quick. I think in that situation, just got to slow down a little bit and think through the glove… instead just pulling off, getting rotational.”

Painter walked two batters with the bases loaded during Miami’s scoring rally—an event not seen from a Phillies pitcher since July 23 against Boston. Marlins hitter Xavier Edwards hit a solo home run off him in the fifth inning and commented on facing Painter: “His fastball cuts a bit… The split was good… Split was a really good pitch.”

Saturday’s matchup featured former first-round draft picks: Painter (13th overall pick by Philadelphia in 2021) faced Max Meyer (third overall pick by Miami in 2020). Meyer dominated as Philadelphia managed only one hit—a single from Garrett Stubbs—marking their first one-hit game since April 18, 2023.

Interim manager Don Mattingly praised Meyer’s competitiveness: “He’s competitive… you know, a guy with good stuff and competitive is a pretty good combo.” Meanwhile Kyle Schwarber struck out eight consecutive times across two games—the most by any Phillies position player since Major League Baseball’s Expansion Era began.

The Philadelphia Phillies have achieved World Series victories twice—in 1980 and again in 2008—according to their official website. The team represents Philadelphia both locally and nationally through Major League Baseball games and community outreach efforts according to their official website. Since 2004 they have played home games at Citizens Bank Park as reported by their official site, led by executives including their chief executive officer and general manager according to team information. As charter members of MLB’s National League the official website notes, they serve fans throughout Philadelphia as well as regional and national audiences per club details.

Mattingly concluded about Schwarber’s struggles at bat: “Maybe he’s not seeing the ball good here… but not a guy that you really worry about unless it gets extended.”
