Davon Nelson, a 41-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland, was sentenced on May 19 to 18 months in prison for possessing a weapon while incarcerated at Allenwood Federal Correctional Institution. The sentencing was handed down by Chief United States District Judge Matthew W. Brann.

The case is significant as it underscores the efforts of federal authorities to address contraband and safety issues within correctional facilities. According to United States Attorney Brian D. Miller, Nelson was found with an inmate-made sharpened steel weapon measuring four and a half inches long on October 8, 2024.

“The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Davon Nelson, age 41, of Baltimore, MD, was sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Matthew W. Brann to 18 months in prison for possessing a weapon in prison,” Miller said.

The investigation into the incident involved both the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Zenzinger prosecuted the case.

The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania promotes community safety through initiatives like Project Safe Neighborhoods and re-entry services that reduce recidivism, according to the official website. The office serves about 3.2 million residents across its region and maintains facilities in Harrisburg, Scranton, Williamsport and Wilkes-Barre while handling prosecutions of federal crimes and victim assistance programs under the Department of Justice over an area covering more than twenty-one thousand square miles according to its official website.

As this case concludes with sentencing, it reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to ensure institutional security and uphold federal laws.
