Rep. Brendan Boyle, a U.S. Congressman representing Pennsylvania’s 2nd district since 2015, used his social media platform on September 30, 2025, to criticize Republican leadership for actions he claims are jeopardizing both government operations and health care coverage for millions of Americans.

In a post made at 2:00 AM UTC, Boyle wrote: “Republicans would rather shut the government down than save health care for millions of Americans.

I came to Washington today to lower health care costs and keep the government open, but Republican leadership literally locked us out.”

Later that day, at 3:07 PM UTC, Boyle addressed what appears to be criticism or rebuttal from political opponents. He stated: “Actually, it’s you who would rather shut the government down than protect health care for Americans.

More than 37,000 of your constituents will lose coverage. Thousands more will see premiums skyrocket.

All because of the Republican health care crisis YOU voted for.”

At 4:09 PM UTC on the same day, Boyle added: “I showed up to Washington ready to avert a shutdown — but Republicans locked the door to the House of Representatives.

Republicans could open Congress up and solve this, but they would rather take health care from millions of their constituents.”

Boyle’s comments come amid heightened tensions in Congress over budget negotiations and looming threats of a federal government shutdown. Disputes between Democrats and Republicans over funding levels and policy provisions have repeatedly brought legislative work in Washington to a standstill in recent years.

Brendan Boyle has served in Congress since replacing Allyson Schwartz in 2015. Before joining Congress, he represented parts of Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015. Born in Philadelphia in 1977 and currently residing there, Boyle is an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame.
