President Donald J. Trump announced a series of actions to strengthen the nation’s farm economy and called for swift passage of a new farm bill during the White House Great American Agriculture Celebration, according to a Mar. 27 statement from House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson.

Thompson said that President Trump has shown consistent support for farmers and rural communities by working to create fairer conditions in global markets and building a stable trade policy framework. He also highlighted the importance of providing both immediate assistance and long-term certainty through legislative action. “The President’s commitment to America’s farmers and the rural economy is unmatched. He has never wavered in his efforts to level the playing field across global markets. After four years of inaction by the previous Administration, President Trump has been dedicated to building a trade policy framework that will provide long sought after certainty for our farmers, ranchers, and producers,” Thompson said.

The House Committee on Agriculture plays several roles in supporting agricultural interests across states, including backing nutrition programs designed to improve access to healthy foods according to its official website. The committee also oversees federal initiatives aimed at encouraging innovation within production agriculture according to its official website.

Additionally, the committee is recognized for its oversight of financial regulations that benefit agriculture according to its official website, aligns with Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives according to its official website, and helps shape farm bills that promote climate-smart solutions for farmers and ranchers according to its official website.

Thompson emphasized collaboration between Congress and the administration as key moving forward: “Bringing farmers and ranchers from across the country to Washington shows that this Administration cares more than any other about the health of the rural economy. Recognizing the importance of providing short-term stability through assistance, combined with the certainty of a long-term farm bill, will help make agriculture great again. I look forward to working with President Trump and my colleagues in the House and Senate to deliver results for American agriculture.”

Looking ahead, further steps are expected as Congress considers new legislation affecting producers nationwide.
