The 29th annual Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Golf Tournament, hosted by Nittany Lion basketball head coach Mike Rhoades, will take place on May 29 at the Penn State Golf Courses, according to a May 11 announcement.

The event is organized to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society, supporting cancer research and mission programs in the local community. The tournament has become a significant fundraising effort for Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State through its golf event as well as other activities and partnerships.

Presented by PSECU, the five-player, 18-hole scramble tournament is expected to welcome over 425 golfers, sponsors, and regional sports figures. Activities begin on May 28 with a Sponsors/Captain Reception at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park featuring food, beverages, contests, and music. An awards dinner will follow the golf tournament on Friday night at Hawbaker Pavilion at the Penn State Golf Course. An online auction will also be held with proceeds benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State.

Participants in the tournament will include members of the men’s basketball coaching staff along with current and former head coaches from various sports, athletes, department leaders, and special guests.

The local chapter was established in 1995 by former head coach Bruce Parkhill and has since raised more than $5 million net to date through its efforts. The annual golf tournament began in 1997 under then-coach Jerry Dunn’s leadership and has generated over $3.2 million so far.

Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State hosts several events throughout the year; information about upcoming activities can be found on their website.
