As a possible federal government shutdown approaches, Common Cause has urged Senator John Fetterman to oppose President Trump’s budget proposal. The organization claims the proposed budget would reduce healthcare funding and other essential services while offering tax cuts to wealthy Americans.

“Senator Fetterman could have stopped the president’s power grabs in the March funding fight, but chose to back down,” said Shauntay Nelson, Vice President of States for Common Cause. “Six months later, Trump and his congressional allies have only gotten bolder — putting our lives at stake by gutting healthcare and critical services for working American families just to give his billionaire friends a tax cut. Will Senator Fetterman fight back for the American people this time or roll over for President Trump’s corrupt, billionaire agenda?”

Common Cause is calling on Congress to approve a budget that maintains access to healthcare by extending Affordable Care Act tax credits set to expire later this year and reversing Medicaid cuts passed in July. The group also wants measures added that would prevent any president from shutting down government services relied upon by children, families, and seniors.

The organization warns that if tax cuts for high earners are prioritized over healthcare benefits, more than 20 million Americans could face annual increases in their health insurance premiums of up to $4,000 as costs continue rising.

A government shutdown will occur if lawmakers do not pass a new budget by September 30.
