Two members of the University of Pennsylvania baseball team were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, announced by the organization on June 2.
Senior right-hander Jake Moss and junior left-hander Marty Coyne received recognition for their achievements both on the field and in the classroom. The Academic All-District program recognizes student-athletes across the nation for combined academic and athletic accomplishments.
Moss, a senior from Manhasset, New York, worked his way into Penn’s starting rotation in his final season. He matched a career high with 11 appearances, including seven starts. His four wins, 47.1 innings pitched, and 46 strikeouts were all career bests. Moss ranked ninth in the Ivy League in batters struck out looking with 14 and held opposing hitters to a .295 average over the season. His top performance came during Penn’s conference-opening win over Dartmouth on March 21, when he pitched a career-high 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs.
Coyne transitioned from bullpen duty to become one of the Ivy League’s leading pitchers this year. The junior posted career highs across several categories: innings pitched (70.2), strikeouts (66), earned run average (4.58), batters struck out looking (20), wins (5), opposing batting average (.249), and walks allowed (15). Coyne had five games with at least seven strikeouts and was awarded All-Ivy Honorable Mention status.
Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball competes at the NCAA Division I level as part of its intercollegiate athletics program, maintains membership in the Ivy League, and hosts home games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium, according to the official website.
