Last month, the Pennsylvania Senate passed a school voucher bill that was being championed by Gov. Josh Shapiro and fellow Democrats.

Corey DeAngelis, senior fellow at American Federation for Children, announced the June 29 passage of the school voucher bill, according to a post on Twitter. DeAngelis represents the prominent national organization that advocates for school choice

“BREAKING: Pennsylvania Senate just passed a bill to fund students instead of systems,” DeAngelis said on Twitter. “The vote was 29 to 21. It now goes to the House. The Democratic Governor, Josh Shapiro, included private school choice in his education platform.”

James Copland Sr., fellow and director of legal policy at the Manhattan Institute responded to DeAngelis in his own Twitter post, calling DeAngelis a hero.

“And as far as how we can start ameliorating the racial gaps in education outcomes underlying today’s disparate Supreme Court opinions, breaking the government-sanctioned monopoly on primary school education is a critical step,” Copland added, according to Twitter.

Washington Institute Education Policy Analyst Liv Finne also commented on the recent actions, according to a Twitter post.

“The PA union is upset Governor Shapiro, a Democrat, may give students assigned to failing schools a Lifeline Scholarship to private school,” Finne said on Twitter. “The union would trap children in failing schools. Gov. Shapiro and @Coreydeangelis are heroes. They are fighting for the kids.”

During Shapiro’s campaign, the Democrat consistently expressed his support for school choice demonstrating commitment to the cause, according to a June 30 Forbes report. However, the Pennsylvania Federation of Teachers has taken a stance against the school voucher bill.

Despite the opposition, Shapiro said he would sign a school choice bill into law if it passes through legislation, Forbes reported. Despite the governor’s support, Democrats are predicting the bill will face challenges in getting approval from the House.
