Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was selected 76th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the NFL Draft on April 24.
Allar’s selection marks a notable moment for Penn State, as he becomes the program’s first quarterback drafted by the Steelers and its fourth quarterback drafted since 2016. He is also Penn State’s first quarterback taken since Sean Clifford was chosen by the Green Bay Packers in 2023.
With offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane being picked 14th overall by the Baltimore Ravens and Allar’s selection, Penn State has had two players chosen through the first two days of this year’s draft. This continues a nine-year streak for Penn State with multiple picks in that period. Overall, a total of 397 Nittany Lions have been selected all-time in the NFL Draft, which ranks seventh among Division I schools. Since 2016, Penn State has seen 61 players drafted, including 28 within the initial two days.
Allar is now one of five former Nittany Lions currently on Pittsburgh’s roster and is their first at his position from Penn State. He was voted All-Big Ten honorable mention in both 2023 and 2024, started in 35 games with PSU, led them to significant victories including wins in both College Football Playoff First Round and Fiesta Bowl games, and holds several school records such as career completion percentage (63.2) and interception percentage (1.3). Among other achievements, he opened his collegiate career with an FBS record of over three hundred passing attempts without an interception.
The announcement comes ahead of Penn State opening its season under new head coach Matt Campbell on September 5 against Marshall.
