Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick and Congressman Steny H. Hoyer introduced a bipartisan resolution on May 4 commemorating Public Service Recognition Week, which is observed from May 3 through May 9, 2026. The resolution aims to honor the dedication and professionalism of America’s public servants and encourages Americans to recognize those who serve at all levels of government.
The initiative highlights the essential role that public employees play in communities across the country. It seeks to bring attention to their contributions, especially during times when their work may be overlooked or underappreciated.
“A nation is only as strong as the people entrusted to serve it,” said Fitzpatrick. “America’s public servants shoulder responsibilities that touch nearly every part of our national life — from public safety and veterans services to infrastructure, research, national security, and the protection of constitutional rights. Their work is demanding, often unseen, and essential to a government that is accountable, capable, and worthy of the people it serves. As a former federal law enforcement officer, I have seen the discipline, integrity, and sense of duty this work requires. I am grateful to join Congressman Hoyer in honoring the Americans who choose public service as their mission and carry it out every day with professionalism, purpose, and devotion to country.”
“During Public Service Recognition Week, we highlight the dedication and commitment of the public employees who make a difference in the lives of Americans every day and keep our country moving forward,” said Hoyer. “They have continued to show up and use their voices despite the threats to their careers and livelihoods over this past year – and with little recognition or reward. It is critical that Congress continues to ensure that they receive the support and appreciation they deserve. That’s why I’m proud to join Rep. Fitzpatrick in introducing a bipartisan resolution to honor Public Service Recognition Week. I hope that everyone will take this week to thank public employees for their contributions and their commitment, and those of us who appreciate all they do will continue our fight to protect them.”
Several leaders representing unions for government workers also voiced support for recognizing public service employees during this weeklong observance.
Brian Fitzpatrick has served in Congress representing Pennsylvania’s 1st District since 2017 according to his biography. He was born in Philadelphia in 1973 at age 49 he resides in Levittown; he graduated from La Salle University with a Bachelor’s degree before earning his Juris Doctor from Pennsylvania State University according to Ballotpedia.
Matthew Biggs (International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers), Max Stier (Partnership for Public Service), Doreen Greenwald (National Treasury Employees Union), Lee Saunders (AFSCME), Randy Erwin (National Federation of Federal Employees) all thanked lawmakers for supporting government workers through this recognition effort.
As more attention turns toward those serving at federal, state or local levels during Public Service Recognition Week—and as debates about workplace rights continue—leaders say such resolutions are important reminders about supporting those whose daily efforts impact American communities.
