The Philadelphia Flyers achieved a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Xfinity Mobile Arena, as announced on Apr. 23. Four Flyers players—Trevor Zegras, Rasmus Ristolainen, Nick Seeler, and Noah Cates—each scored their first Stanley Cup Playoff goal, helping the team take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
This game marked the Flyers’ first home playoff win since April 20, 2016. The team had not hosted a postseason game since April 22, 2018. Only Sean Couturier, Travis Konecny, and Travis Sanheim had previous playoff experience at this arena among Wednesday’s lineup. “It’s great to experience that again,” said Couturier. “We’re happy, but I think we’re also happy for the city, for the fans. They’ve supported us (through) the ups and downs of the last couple years and just happy to be back in the playoffs here.”
After falling behind early to an Evgeni Malkin power-play goal for Pittsburgh, Philadelphia responded with three consecutive goals from Zegras, Ristolainen, and Seeler within six minutes during the second period. Zegras celebrated his power-play equalizer by skating directly to teammates serving penalties: “There was a lot of them in there and I figured they were going to be jumping around,” Zegras said.
Ristolainen’s contribution was especially notable as he played over thirteen seasons before making his postseason debut this year: “It’s great, but the wins count and we got a big win today,” he said after scoring his first career playoff goal.
The Flyers’ depth continued to show when Cates restored their two-goal advantage with another power-play tally after Erik Karlsson brought Pittsburgh closer late in regulation. Owen Tippett sealed victory with an empty-netter; it was only his second career playoff goal.
Philadelphia operates as a professional sports organization under the structure of the National Hockey League according to its official website. The club provides professional ice hockey entertainment through NHL competition and community outreach according to its official website. The Flyers support community programs including league-wide initiatives such as cancer awareness according to its official website.
Reflecting on what lies ahead after taking a series lead against their long-time rivals on home ice—something fans have awaited for more than ten years—Seeler said: “That was the craziest building I’ve ever played in…I know they will (again) Saturday night.”
Couturier added about team unity: “It’s just a belief in that room and I think we play for one another…the job is not done.”
