Geisinger staff members who care for mothers and babies in the hospital participated in a training program designed to promote empathy and inclusivity, according to an April 14 announcement.
The initiative is important as it seeks to improve healthcare experiences and outcomes for mothers, infants, and families by addressing how assumptions can affect patient care. The program aims to help healthcare professionals recognize their own preconceptions and use evidence-based strategies for more respectful communication.
Developed by the March of Dimes, the Awareness to Action: Implementing Respectful Maternal and Infant Healthcare Practices program provides continuing medical education and nursing education accreditation. The training was supported by Pampers.
Kim Drumgo, Chief Accessibility and Opportunity Officer at Geisinger, said, “Providing respectful, compassionate care is essential to improving outcomes and experiences for mothers, infants and families. The Awareness to Action program strengthens our teams’ ability to build trust, communicate effectively and partner with patients and families in ways that support dignity, safety and respect throughout the care journey.”
Geisinger serves 1.2 million people across central and northeastern Pennsylvania through a nonprofit system that includes 163 care sites such as hospital campuses as well as a health plan with over half a million members. It employs more than 27,000 people including physicians and nurses. In 2024 Geisinger joined Risant Health.
