Nathan Witteveen, a member of the Geisinger School of Medicine MD class of 2027, has received the College of American Pathologists’ (CAP) 2026 Distinguished Medical Student Award, according to an announcement on Apr. 15.

The award is presented each year to a medical student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in pathology. Witteveen was nominated for the honor by Renee Frank, professor of pathology at Geisinger College of Health Sciences.

“Nathan consistently shows initiative, curiosity and meaningful engagement in pathology,” Dr. Frank said. “He seeks opportunities to learn, asks thoughtful questions and demonstrates maturity in connecting concepts. Nathan’s enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment make him an outstanding future pathologist worthy of recognition.”

The CAP award recognizes students who show initiative in learning about pathology and participate actively in related activities. Witteveen said he intends to pursue a career in pathology because it is “a constantly evolving field that offers a broad scope of practice.” He also credited Dr. Frank’s mentorship as key to his interest: “Dr. Frank’s mentorship has been instrumental in strengthening my interest in the field by encouraging my curiosity and giving me meaningful opportunities to engage more deeply with pathology.”

Geisinger College of Health Sciences describes itself as focusing on discovery, hands-on learning and applied practice across its system while offering research institutes and graduate education programs.
