Geisinger medical students announced on Apr. 30 that they will host a free ‘Walk with a Doc’ event for area residents on Sunday, May 3, at 11 a.m. along the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail.
The event is open to people of all ages and fitness levels, offering participants an opportunity to join a guided walk while engaging with medical students and local health professionals. Organizers say the walk aims to promote healthy habits and encourage community members to discuss health topics in an informal setting.
“Events like this help create dialog between patients and healthcare professionals,” said Yajusha Krishna, a Geisinger medical student helping to organize the event. “Walking together creates a comfortable space to talk about everyday health questions while reinforcing how small steps, like regular movement, can make a big difference over time.”
The Walk with a Doc program is part of an international nonprofit initiative focused on improving health through education, movement and community connection. The Family Medicine Interest Group at Geisinger College’s School of Medicine will host the walk starting from the West Olive Street entrance of the trail. Community members are encouraged to bring friends, family members or pets.
More information about registration is available at https://walkwithadoc.org/event/?id=221902&chapter=5274&date=05/03/2026.
According to organizers, events like these support ongoing efforts by Geisinger College of Health Sciences to engage with local communities through educational outreach.
