Gennings Dunker, recently selected in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, returned to his hometown of Lena, Illinois, on May 26 to celebrate with family and friends after a tornado struck the area just one week earlier.
On April 17, a strong EF2 tornado caused significant damage in Lena. Winds reaching up to 130 miles per hour uprooted trees and damaged homes along an 8.5-mile stretch. Dunker said he watched from Iowa City as a storm chaser followed the event online. “It was a week before the Draft,” said Dunker. “I was watching from Iowa City. There was a storm chaser following it around on YouTube. The crazy thing too, is there were still kids in the school when it hit, and part of the roof came off. It was bad.” While no injuries were reported, extensive cleanup efforts followed.
Dunker described seeing resilience upon his return: “I think Lena had 1,000 volunteers the next day working to clean things up,” said Dunker. “And that’s in a town of 2,600 people.” He expected to help with chainsaw work but found much had already been done by community members using machinery and farm equipment.
The community gathered for Dunker’s draft party despite recent events. He hosted an open event providing food and beverages while raising funds for Lena Wilson High School’s football program. “I wanted anyone from my hometown to be able to come and enjoy it,” said Dunker. “It was an event open for anyone to be there… I know everybody there… so it was awesome to celebrate that with them.” The night saw strong support as residents celebrated his selection by Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have achieved notable success with six Super Bowl championships in their history and are affiliated with the National Football League as a member franchise; they also contribute to community engagement through historical celebrations such as their Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium displaying artifacts and honors, according to their official website.
