Penn State announced on Mar. 31 that senior swimmer Mariano Lazzerini has been named a Second-Team All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. The recognition follows his performance at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships held from March 25 to March 28.
Lazzerini received the honor after finishing 12th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 51.41 seconds, which marks the highest placement ever for Penn State in this event at the NCAA Championships. In addition to his individual achievement, Lazzerini competed in the 200 breaststroke, where he placed 19th overall with a time of 1:52.48—the best result for Penn State since at least 1990.
The Chile native also participated as part of Penn State’s relay teams during the championships. Alongside teammates Cooper Morley, Matthew Bittner, and Tylor Kim, Lazzerini helped secure a 19th-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:23.38, representing Penn State’s best showing in this event at nationals since 2014. The group also finished 24th in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:05.71.
The achievements highlight significant progress for Penn State Swimming and Diving at national competitions.
