The University of Pennsylvania announced on May 14 that nine members of its baseball team have been named to the All-Ivy teams, with senior co-captain Thomas Shurtleff and junior outfielder Gavin Degnan earning unanimous first-team selections. The Ivy League released its postseason awards Thursday afternoon.
This recognition highlights the strength and depth of the Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball program, which competes in NCAA Division I athletics as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s intercollegiate program, according to the official website.
In addition to Shurtleff and Degnan, Ernie Echevarria, Jarrett Pokrovsky, and Jack Warner were also named to the first team. Infielders Nick Spaventa and Jay Secretarski earned second-team honors, while Marty Coyne and Ryan Taylor received honorable mention status. Shurtleff was also recognized as Penn’s Academic All-Ivy representative. Degnan led his team in several offensive categories including hits (49), batting average (.304), RBIs (40), doubles (12), total bases (86), slugging percentage (.534), and maintained a perfect fielding percentage. Shurtleff stood out on the mound with a 2.20 ERA over Ivy League play without recording a loss.
Other honorees contributed significantly during conference play: Echevarria excelled both offensively and defensively as catcher; Pokrovsky set a new program record for career doubles; Warner impressed as designated hitter; Spaventa led in home runs among teammates; Secretarski stole 20 bases as a freshman; Coyne made it onto the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s National Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List; Taylor broke school records for stolen bases and games played.
Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball maintains membership in the Ivy League and hosts home games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium, according to the official website.
The Quakers are preparing for another appearance in the Ivy League Tournament this Friday at Yale’s George H.W. Bush ’48 Field in New Haven, aiming for their third title in four seasons.
