Pennsylvania House Republicans have announced that Representative D’Orsie introduced the Student Freedom Account Act, a legislative proposal aimed at increasing parental control over children’s education through expanded school choice options.
The Student Freedom Account Act, sponsored by Rep. D’Orsie, is part of an ongoing Republican initiative in Pennsylvania to reform K–12 education by enhancing parental choice. The bill proposes the creation of education savings accounts for families, enabling state education funds to follow students to their preferred schools—whether public, private, charter, or homeschool. Supporters claim this model empowers parents, fosters competition, and addresses persistent inequities in school performance across districts. However, the Pennsylvania House Republicans express frustration over the measure’s stagnation in the House Education Committee due to Democratic leadership’s hesitance to advance school choice initiatives.
According to the Commonwealth Foundation, over 250,000 Pennsylvania students currently attend schools classified as low-performing under state academic standards. Studies indicate that school choice programs in states like Florida and Arizona have led to improved student outcomes and increased parental satisfaction while reducing per-pupil costs. Pennsylvania Republicans suggest that similar reforms could benefit families throughout the Commonwealth.
Nationally, education savings account programs have expanded to more than ten states since 2021, serving over 400,000 students. Data from EdChoice reveals that participating families report satisfaction rates exceeding 90% with their chosen schools, highlighting individualized instruction and safer learning environments as significant factors.
The Pennsylvania House Republicans represent GOP lawmakers in the state’s lower chamber based in Harrisburg. The caucus advocates for policies promoting fiscal responsibility, educational freedom, and family-centered governance while working towards legislative reforms aimed at expanding opportunities and ensuring accountable state leadership.
