Penn baseball prepares for key Ivy League series against Harvard

The University of Pennsylvania baseball team will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts for a three-game Ivy League series against Harvard, according to an April 24 announcement. The Quakers are looking to improve their standing in the conference after recent losses to Saint Joseph’s and Princeton.

This matchup is significant as Penn holds third place in the Ivy League with a 9-6 record, trailing Yale and Brown. The upcoming games could impact playoff positions, with several teams closely ranked in the standings. Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball competes at the NCAA Division I level and maintains membership in the Ivy League, according to the official website.

Senior infielder Ryan Taylor recently set a program record for single-season stolen bases with his 26th steal during a game at Citizens Bank Park. Taylor also holds the all-time career stolen base record for Penn. Other notable contributors include junior Nick Spaventa and freshman Jay Secretarsli, who both lead the team with a .279 batting average this season. Co-captain Jarrett Pokrovsky has also been productive at bat during his senior campaign.

On the mound, senior right-hander Thomas Shurtleff leads Penn pitchers with a 3.12 earned run average over nine appearances and was recognized twice as Ivy League Pitcher of the Week following strong performances against Princeton. Jake Moss and Marty Coyne are expected to be key pitchers over the weekend; Coyne currently ranks sixth among league pitchers in earned run average.

Harvard enters this series fifth in conference standings with an overall record of 8-22 but has shown strength within league play. Gio Colasante leads Harvard hitters with seven home runs this season while also contributing on the mound as one of few two-way players in conference play.

Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball uses Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium for home games as part of its intercollegiate athletics program at NCAA Division I level, according to the official website. Fans can watch all three games live on ESPN+ or follow along via live stats throughout the weekend.
