Penn State track and field athletes achieved several program milestones on April 17 during the second day of the Virginia Challenge.
The results highlight strong performances across multiple events, with school records being broken and personal bests improved. The achievements demonstrate the depth and competitiveness of Penn State’s team at a major meet.
Hayley Kitching led the way in the women’s 1500-meter invite, setting a new program record with a time of 4:05.81. This result also became a facility record and marked an improvement of nearly ten seconds for Kitching personally. Ada Rand followed with the sixth-fastest time in program history at 4:14.79. In sprints, Marie-Éloïse LeClair posted an 11.25 in the women’s 100-meter, making it the second-fastest mark ever by a Penn State athlete, just behind Connie Moore’s longstanding record from 2004.
Field events saw Alex Pancoast, Gabby Cope (with a personal best), and Gabi Deglau all place within the top third in women’s hammer throw out of forty-five competitors. Jenna Young won the women’s high jump with her own personal best at 5-8.50 (1.74m). In distance races, Claire Daniels finished ninth for women while Jacob Smith took eighth for men in their respective 1500-meter races.
Allison Johnson improved her standing to eighth-best all-time for Penn State in the women’s 800 meters by running a third-place finish at 2:04.55; Tayissa Buchanan was close behind at fifth place with a time of 2:04.96. The men dominated their event as Niko Schultz ran a historic third-fastest program time (1:45.24), closely trailed by Allon Clay (fourth fastest) and Yukichi Ishii (eighth fastest). Together they secured top placements alongside teammates Andrew Regnier, Kaleb Nastari, and Carter Fitzgerald.
Other notable results included Addyson White’s personal best in women’s hurdles (1:00.31), Justin Healey’s sixth place finish in men’s steeplechase (8:59.18), Kyle Moore finishing second in men’s long jump (24-3), Collin Burkhart breaking through to fifth place with his hammer throw over sixty-six meters, Ryan Henry achieving seventh-best all-time shot put mark for Penn State (63-11), and Sasha Garnett moving up to sixth all-time among Nittany Lions shot putters.
