The Penn State baseball team defeated Washington 4-0 on May 9 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, securing a series victory and marking their second shutout of the season. Freshman pitcher Isaiah Shayter led with five scoreless innings while Jesse Jaconski and Avery Smith each hit home runs for the Nittany Lions.

This win was significant as it was Penn State’s first shutout against a Big Ten opponent since April 10, 2021. The game also served as Senior Day, with fourteen seniors honored before play began.

Shayter allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out five batters across his outing. He has now given up just one run in his last ten and one-third innings over recent starts. Dimond Loosli contributed a scoreless inning, Ben DeMell pitched two shutout frames—marking his record-setting seventy-ninth career appearance—and Mason Horwat closed the game with a perfect ninth inning.

Offensively, Penn State recorded ten hits and four runs. Smith had a career-high three hits including a two-run homer, while Jaconski homered for the second consecutive day and scored three times. Seven different Nittany Lions registered at least one hit during the game.

Washington managed four hits but did not advance any runner past second base. Hayden Lewis started for Washington but gave up all four runs across five-plus innings.

Looking ahead, Penn State will travel to face Pitt on Tuesday, May 12 before concluding their regular season against Maryland from May 14 to May 16.
