Penn State men’s gymnastics finished fifth with a season-low score of 310.850 at the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 4. Despite the team’s performance, six student-athletes from Penn State will compete in the individual finals across seven routines and five events.

The competition matters as it determines individual and team placements within the Big Ten Conference, providing athletes opportunities to qualify for further honors and recognition.

Graduate student Kellen Ryan achieved a career-best score of 76.700 in only his third All-Around event, earning third place overall. The Nittany Lions started strong on vault with a leading score of 55.600 after the first rotation, highlighted by Ryan’s 14.100 and freshman Shaun Smith’s 14.050; both advanced to Saturday’s vault finals.

Junior Akseli Karsikas led Penn State on parallel bars with a score of 13.550, securing fifth place and advancing to that event’s final round. He also posted a top-10 worthy high bar routine (13.600), earning him seventh place and another finals appearance.

Senior Kacper Garczarek recorded Penn State’s highest floor exercise score at 13.150 for tenth place, making him second alternate for that event’s final round. Freshman Ritam Malik advanced to pommel horse finals with his own tenth-place finish (13.200). On still rings, Underhill posted a third-place finish (13.850) and will pursue an event title in the finals.

Looking ahead, Garnczarek, Karsikas, Malik, Ryan, and Underhill are set to compete again during Saturday night’s individual finals at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.
