Penn State men’s tennis defeats No. 69 Northwestern for first ranked win of season

The Penn State men’s tennis team defeated No. 69 Northwestern 4-3 on Mar. 27, collecting its first ranked win of the season and second conference victory. The result brings the Nittany Lions’ overall record to 14-7.

The match was closely contested, with Penn State securing the win through strong singles performances after dropping the doubles point to Northwestern. Sophomore David Lindsay earned a singles victory over Ethan Schiffman, putting Penn State on the scoreboard. Redshirt sophomore Marcus Schoeman added another point by defeating Cyrus Mahjoob in straight sets, while freshman Eyal Shyovitz tied the match with a three-set win against Cooper Han.

Freshman Kyle Chesman clinched the decisive point for Penn State by overcoming Chad Miller in a tight three-set contest on court six. In doubles play, Emil Matikainen and Schoeman fell to Han and Owen Megargee on court three (3-6), while Reiya Hattori and Shyovitz lost to Schiffman and Mahjoob on court two (4-6). Michael Wright and Lindsay were tied at four games apiece against Carter Pate and Greyson Casey when their match was abandoned as Northwestern had already secured the doubles point.

In other singles matches, Wright was defeated by Pate (3-6, 4-6) on court one, while Hattori fell to Casey (2-6, 3-6) on court three.

Looking ahead, Penn State will host No. 14 Illinois for another Big Ten matchup scheduled for Sunday, March 29 at 10 a.m.
