The Penn State men’s tennis team lost to No. 14 Illinois by a score of 1-6 on Mar. 29. The defeat leaves the Nittany Lions with a season record of 14 wins and eight losses.
The match was played at University Park, where freshman Kyle Chesman secured the only singles point for Penn State by defeating Jeremy Zhang on court six in a closely contested match that ended with scores of 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (3-7), and a deciding super tiebreaker at 10-8.
In doubles play, Chesman and Marcus Schoeman lost to Tyler Bowers and Sasha Colleu on court three, while Michael Wright and David Lindsay were defeated by the No. 41 ranked pair Kenta Miyoshi and William Mroz. The third doubles match featuring Reiya Hattori and Eyal Shyovitz was abandoned after Illinois secured the doubles point.
For singles matches, Wright fell to No. 23 Miyoshi; Hattori lost in two sets against Adam Jilly; Lindsay was beaten by Colleu; Schoeman fought hard but ultimately lost to No.101 Mroz; Shyovitz was defeated by Hayden Jones.
Looking ahead, Penn State will travel to California for matches against No.24 Southern California on Friday, April 3, followed by an encounter with No.20 UCLA on Saturday, April 4.
