The Penn State men’s volleyball team secured an undefeated record in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) regular season with a 3-2 victory over George Mason on April 18 at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 15, finished the conference slate at 12-0 and improved their overall record to 20-7, entering the EIVA Tournament as the top seed.

The achievement is significant as it marks Penn State’s ninth consecutive win and extends its winning streak against George Mason to thirteen matches. The team will host the EIVA Tournament at Rec Hall from Wednesday through Saturday, receiving a bye into the semifinal round where they will face either Charleston or Sacred Heart.

Sean Harvey led Penn State with a double-double performance, recording 18 kills and a career-high 15 digs along with three blocks and one ace. Freshman Tristan Hassell also contributed significantly by achieving a career-best of 26 kills on .347 hitting, five blocks, seven digs, and two aces. Senior Day was celebrated by Owen Rose and Ryan Merk; Rose tallied seven kills on .545 hitting with eight blocks while Merk had ten digs.

The match featured momentum swings across all five sets. George Mason took the first set after hitting .565 but Penn State responded strongly in subsequent sets behind key runs and efficient offense from players like Hassell and Harvey. In the decisive fifth set, Hassell’s six kills helped build an early lead before Harvey closed out the match following a late tie at thirteen points apiece.

George Mason was led by Robert Evangelista with fifteen kills and Aidan Weltin who added eleven. Four straight matches between these teams have now gone to five sets.

Looking ahead, Penn State will begin its postseason run Thursday in the EIVA Tournament semifinals against either Charleston or Sacred Heart.
