The Penn State men’s volleyball team clinched the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) regular season title and earned hosting rights for the upcoming conference tournament after a 3-2 victory over George Mason on April 17 at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 15, improved their record to 19-7 overall and remained undefeated in conference play at 11-0.
This win not only extended Penn State’s winning streak to eight matches but also ended George Mason’s own eight-match run. The Patriots now hold a record of 20-8 overall and 8-3 in the EIVA.
Head coach Mark Pavlik reached a significant milestone with this victory, moving into sole possession of third place on the NCAA all-time wins list across all divisions in men’s volleyball. Pavlik achieved his 713th career win, surpassing former Ohio State coach Pete Hanson. This accomplishment came during his final season after announcing his retirement following a 32-year coaching career. More than seventy alumni attended the match to honor Pavlik’s achievements.
Matthew Luoma led Penn State offensively with a career-high of 23 kills while hitting .378 and contributing eight digs. Sean Harvey followed closely with twenty kills and added five blocks and six digs on defense. Bennett Wilson contributed nine kills, nine digs, and three blocks as well.
Defensively, Penn State held George Mason to a .162 hitting percentage, helped by Ryan Merk’s ten digs. Owen Rose recorded five blocks while Gaige Gabriel added four more blocks for the Nittany Lions.
Setter Michael Schwob started for the eighth consecutive match—all victories—providing forty-one assists as Penn State hit .308 as a team overall. In the decisive fifth set, Penn State dominated by hitting .750 compared to George Mason’s -.091 clip; both Harvey and Luoma had four kills each without errors on five attacks apiece.
George Mason was led by Aidan Welton who finished with twelve kills and eleven digs for a double-double performance.
