Penn State reported on May 8 that its student-athletes have shown strong academic performance, based on Academic Progress Rate data released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The university said that 21 of its athletic teams achieved perfect APR scores of 1,000 for the 2024-25 academic year. The teams with perfect single-year APR include women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s fencing, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s gymnastics, women’s gymnastics, men’s hockey, women’s hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s track & field and men’s volleyball.
Additionally Penn State announced that ten of its squads received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA. These awards honor teams whose APRs rank among the top ten percent in their respective sports. The recognized teams are men’s cross country; women’s cross country; women’s golf; women’s gymnastics; men’s hockey; women’s swimming & diving; men’s tennis; women’s tennis; women’s track & field and men’s volleyball.
The Academic Progress Rate is a metric used by the NCAA to measure eligibility and retention of student-athletes at member institutions. Teams must meet certain thresholds to avoid penalties or loss of postseason eligibility.
Penn State’s results highlight continued academic achievement among its athletes during the most recent reporting period.
