The Penn State women’s tennis team lost a 4-2 match against Iowa on April 3, moving to a record of 12-7 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten Conference. The contest took place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City, where the Hawkeyes improved their season record to 10-10 (4-5 Big Ten).
This result is significant for both teams as they continue to compete for higher standings within the conference. The outcome impacts Penn State’s position as it nears the end of its regular season schedule.
In doubles play, Iowa secured the opening point with wins on courts two and three. Jordina Cegarra and Maria Daciana Ciubotaru lost their match on court three, while Patricia Grigoras and Maiko Uchijima were narrowly defeated on court two. The top doubles pairing of Olivia Dorner and Maelie Monfils had their match unfinished but trailed by one game.
During singles competition, Uchijima earned a straight-set victory for Penn State after coming from behind in her first set. Grigoras added another point for Penn State with a three-set win at court two, marking her second consecutive Big Ten singles victory following her previous success against Rutgers. However, losses by Monfils, Baldi, and Ciubotaru allowed Iowa to clinch the overall team win before Dorner’s competitive third-court match could be completed.
Looking ahead, Penn State will finish its weekend road trip with a contest at Nebraska scheduled for Sunday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
