Penn State women’s tennis earned a 4-1 victory against Oregon on Senior Day, April 19, at the Indoor Tennis Center. The match marked the final home appearance for seniors Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima, who were honored as part of the day’s festivities.
The win clinched Penn State a spot in the upcoming Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament presented by Allstate, scheduled from April 23 to 26 at Ohio State’s Ty Tucker Tennis Center. With this result, Penn State improved its season record to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in Big Ten play, while Oregon fell to 12-13 overall and 3-10 in conference matches.
Oregon took an early lead by winning the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. However, Penn State responded strongly in singles play. Maelie Monfils evened the score with a straight-set win at court one. Patricia Grigoras followed with another victory on court two before Uchijima extended Penn State’s lead by securing her own singles match at court three—her final home match as a Nittany Lion and her sixtieth career singles win.
Maria Daciana Ciubotaru clinched the overall team victory for Penn State for the seventh consecutive time this season with her straight-set win on court five. Several other matches went unfinished after Penn State secured its fourth point.
The team will next compete in the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament later this month at Ohio State University. Their opponent and match time are yet to be determined.
