The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the commencement of a highway resurfacing project in Juniata and Mifflin Counties, set to begin on Tuesday, June 17. The project aims to enhance ride quality and extend the service life of approximately two-and-a-quarter miles of roadway.
Starting Tuesday, drivers will encounter flaggers during daylight hours as milling operations commence on Route 1005 (Electric Avenue) between Route 3023 (Ort Valley Road) and Route 4013 (West Freedom Avenue) in Derry Township and Burnham Borough in Mifflin County. PennDOT advises drivers to allow extra travel time due to anticipated minor delays and urges caution for slow-moving vehicles in the work zone.
Additionally, milling and paving operations will begin on Route 35 in Mifflintown Borough, Juniata County, on Tuesday evening. Work will start at North Street and proceed southbound to the roundabout in Fermanagh Township, continuing onto Route 3002 (Main Street). During this period, Route 35 will be closed between Route 2006 (Cedar Street/Cedar Springs Road) and Route 3005 (Nelson Road), as well as between the roundabout and Route 333. A detour will direct traffic via Cross Street, Main Street, Route 75, and Route 333. On-street parking along Route 35 will be prohibited during construction.
The project involves milling, paving, guide rail installation, pavement marking, and miscellaneous construction tasks. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc., based in State College, PA, is the contractor for this $1.3 million project. PennDOT expects completion by mid-July; however, all work is weather-dependent.
Motorists can access real-time road conditions through www.511PA.com or via a smartphone application available for iPhone and Android devices. The service provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to over 1,000 traffic cameras.
