The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a temporary closure for the Route 274 culvert replacement project in Perry County. The structure, located between Limestone Ridge Road and Mahanoy Ridge Road in Spring Township, will be closed for several days in July to allow the contractor to set new box culvert sections. The crane required for this task is too large to keep the structure open during the work.
Weather permitting, the bridge closure is scheduled from Tuesday, July 8, until the afternoon of Friday, July 11. During this period, a detour will direct traffic via Route 74, Route 850, and Route 34. Once reopened, traffic will be limited to a single lane controlled by temporary signals.
This project is part of a larger initiative involving three bridges in Perry County. It includes box culvert replacements on Route 274 in Spring Township and Route 850 in Carroll Township, as well as repairs to the Route 34 bridge over the Juniata River in Newport Borough. Work on the Route 850 bridge is expected to start early this summer with a temporary access road allowing two-way traffic around the site. Repairs on the Route 34 bridge are anticipated later this summer with lane restrictions under flagging during daylight hours.
Lobar Site Development Corporation of Dillsburg is handling this $2,706,278 project. Completion is expected by December 2026.
