The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has installed a new radar-controlled speed display board on Route 144 in Milesburg Borough, Centre County. The initiative aims to encourage drivers to adhere to the posted speed limit and curb speeding, which is a prevalent form of aggressive driving.
The newly placed board targets northbound traffic between East Harmony Forge Road and Lion Street in a 35 mile per hour zone. It uses radar technology to measure the speed of approaching vehicles and displays it on a lighted sign. This follows the installation last week of another speed display board for southbound traffic on Route 144, located between Eagle Street and Water Street, also in a 35 mile per hour zone.
Both boards are set to remain at their respective locations for six to eight weeks. PennDOT highlights that speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors contribute significantly to crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania. These behaviors include running stop signs or red lights, illegal passing, and tailgating.
In Centre County alone, aggressive driving was cited as a factor in 54 percent of crashes in 2023. For more information on aggressive driving, PennDOT directs individuals to visit their highway safety website at www.PennDOT.pa.gov/safety.
