The Pennsylvania Courts released an infographic on May 8 highlighting recent data from the state’s mental health courts in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month.

This information is significant as it draws attention to the role of mental health courts in addressing the needs of individuals with severe mental illness who come into contact with the justice system. These specialized courts aim to divert offenders away from incarceration and toward treatment programs under judicial supervision.

According to the newly released data, 72% of all discharged participants in 2024 successfully graduated from these treatment programs. Among those graduates, there was a reported 112% increase in employment.

Mental health courts operate by linking key justice system officials with leaders in the mental health field. Together, they form teams that screen and assess defendants, develop individualized treatment plans, and supervise offenders throughout their participation. The program offers defendants an opportunity to avoid incarceration if they comply with community supervision requirements and mandated treatment protocols.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, officials say these results highlight ongoing efforts to address mental illness within Pennsylvania’s criminal justice system.
