The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the opening of eight new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. This brings the total number of NEVI-funded stations in Pennsylvania to 28. Since December 2023, these stations have facilitated over 53,000 charging sessions and reduced CO2 emissions by more than 1,300 metric tons.
“The Shapiro Administration made reliable and accessible clean transportation a priority for Pennsylvania,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. The state anticipates increased visitors this year and aims to provide infrastructure for green travel.
The newly opened stations include locations in Breezewood, Shrewsbury, Mercer, Newburg, Somerset, Sewickley, and Hunker. These developments are part of a broader effort to expand EV infrastructure across major roadways through the Corridor Connections Funding Opportunity. Proposals for this funding round are being accepted until January 30, 2026.
Additionally, PennDOT plans further investments through Community Charging Funding Opportunities throughout 2026. The U.S. Department of Transportation is withholding some federal funds that would support EV construction in Pennsylvania. Governor Josh Shapiro has taken legal action against the Trump Administration regarding this issue.
