The Pennsylvania Republican Party has publicly condemned Governor Josh Shapiro for promoting a voter-registration site that closely resembles the official state election website, alleging it collects user data for partisan purposes. The party made this announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the Pennsylvania Republican Party’s post, Governor Shapiro is directing traffic to vote.pa, a domain designed to mimic the official vote.pa.gov site. The party expressed concerns over potential voter confusion and labeled this tactic as “cybersquatting,” criticizing it as misleading behavior by a sitting governor. They argue that such actions undermine trust in legitimate voter registration processes and mislead citizens under the guise of civic duty.

An August 13 report by Broad + Liberty revealed that vote.pa is operated by partisan operatives affiliated with Commonwealth Communications. The site’s privacy policy indicates that personal information may be used for political efforts or sold to third parties. The report notes that the site’s design, which features similar color schemes and state outline branding, intentionally mirrors the Department of State’s official portal, increasing the risk of user confusion. This mimicry reportedly allows the site to collect personal data from users seeking to register to vote.

Broad + Liberty’s investigation also found that Governor Shapiro appears in Facebook video ads produced by Black Leadership Pennsylvania, which direct users to the vote.pa site. This association reinforces public perception that it is a government-approved resource. Election security experts cited in the article warn that such tactics could compromise sensitive personal data and undermine election integrity and public confidence in voter registration systems.

The Pennsylvania Republican Party positions itself as an advocate for transparency, election integrity, and government accountability within the Commonwealth. It regularly raises concerns about deceptive practices that could erode voter trust through social media engagement, public statements, and grassroots outreach.
