The Pennsylvania GOP has announced that Senator Ruben Gallego’s visit to Bucks County reflects misplaced priorities, accusing him of ignoring border issues in Arizona while promoting liberal immigration policies in Pennsylvania.

According to the Associated Press, Ruben Gallego, a Democratic U.S. Senator from Arizona, has been a prominent advocate for immigration reform, emphasizing the need for humanitarian approaches to border security. His visit to Bucks County is part of a broader Democratic outreach to connect with voters in key swing states ahead of the 2028 elections. The Pennsylvania GOP criticized Gallego’s visit, suggesting he should focus on addressing border-related issues in his home state before promoting national ambitions.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reports indicate that Arizona remains a significant corridor for drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl. In July 2024, CBP officers at the Port of Lukeville seized approximately 4 million fentanyl pills, weighing over 1,000 pounds—the largest single fentanyl seizure in the agency’s history. This substantial seizure underscores the ongoing challenges Arizona faces in combating drug smuggling across its border.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Pennsylvania had a drug overdose death rate of 40.9 per 100,000 people in 2022, totaling 5,169 deaths. This rate places Pennsylvania among the states with the highest overdose mortality rates in the nation. The Pennsylvania GOP has linked these statistics to its critique of federal border policies, arguing that insufficient enforcement contributes to the influx of illicit drugs like fentanyl.
