Pennsylvania House Republicans have declared that maintaining existing energy generation, including coal, is crucial for ensuring reliability, energy security, and stable prices for ratepayers.
Pennsylvania’s energy sector plays a significant role in its economy. The state ranks among the top electricity producers in the United States due to its diverse mix of coal, natural gas, and nuclear generation. The Pennsylvania House GOP has consistently supported an “all-of-the-above” energy policy, prioritizing domestic reliability and affordability over rapid decarbonization. As federal regulations encourage the closure of coal plants, Republican legislators caution that premature shutdowns could strain the grid, raise electricity costs, and harm industrial competitiveness. Their statement followed a Policy Committee post highlighting the ongoing importance of Pennsylvania coal in meeting statewide and regional power needs, especially during peak demand seasons.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Pennsylvania generated approximately 180 million megawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, ranking third nationally. Coal-fired plants supplied about 13% of that output, while natural gas accounted for 59%. Despite declining coal use, Pennsylvania remains the second-largest coal exporter in the U.S. The Pennsylvania Coal Alliance estimates that coal-related operations support more than 17,000 direct and indirect jobs and provide an estimated $4 billion annual economic impact. Republican lawmakers argue that maintaining this capacity strengthens energy security and preserves critical infrastructure.
Grid reliability concerns have increased as PJM Interconnection projects potential generation shortfalls within the next decade. A 2024 PJM report found that up to 40 gigawatts of fossil fuel generation could retire by 2030, outpacing expected additions of renewable capacity. Analysts warn that insufficient replacement could lead to higher wholesale energy prices and increased blackout risks during extreme weather events. This reinforces arguments from House Republicans for preserving dispatchable energy resources.
The Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus (PA House GOP) represents Republican members in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Based in Harrisburg, it advocates for fiscal responsibility, energy independence, and limited government. It is one of the most active legislative groups shaping state energy, budgetary, and regulatory policy. The caucus maintains committees focused on jobs, infrastructure, and resource development to promote policies protecting ratepayers and sustaining Pennsylvania’s status as an energy-producing leader.
