The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) collaborated with the Highway Safety Network, A.B.A.T.E. of PA, and Traffic Injury Prevention Project (TIPP) to promote safe driving during a safety day event at the Welcome Center in Claysville, Washington County. The event included safety activities and offered visitors summer travel tips.
The PennDOT Workers’ Memorial was displayed at the event. It honors 90 PennDOT employees who have died in the line of duty since 1970. The memorial was created by Bradford County maintenance workers after Leah Rumsey was killed by a car while flagging in a work zone. Five employees from PennDOT District 12 are represented in the memorial: P. Patterson, Thomas Haragos, Robert Queen, Joseph Couch, and Timothy Miller.
PennDOT emphasizes that “the safety of workers in a work zone is truly dependent on each person on Pennsylvania’s roadways.” Drivers are reminded to plan their routes by checking weather, road conditions, and traffic before heading out. Other tips include leaving early to allow plenty of time for travel, ensuring all passengers are buckled up properly, staying alert, and avoiding distractions.
