Pennsylvania State Sen. Doug Mastriano, announcing a property tax relief proposal for elderly homeowners, said “There should come a time when that obligation ends.”
Sen. Mastriano shared details regarding the ‘Sam Worley Elderly Tax Relief Act’ in a social media post. The measure targets homeowners aged 75 and older with extended residency and ownership requirements in Pennsylvania. The announcement aligns with broader discussions on property tax impacts for seniors across the state.
“That is not right. And it is not how we should treat the people who helped build this commonwealth. That is why I am introducing the Sam Worley Elderly Tax Relief Act, legislation designed to provide full property tax relief to long-term elderly homeowners and allow surviving spouses to remain in their homes with stability and dignity,” Mastriano said on his post on X. “This bill is rooted in a simple belief: After decades of paying property taxes, there should come a time when that obligation ends. After a lifetime of paying property taxes, our seniors deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing they can remain in their homes.”
After an income cap adjustment made in 2024, more than 100,000 additional Pennsylvania seniors qualified for property tax and rent rebates, as reported by Penn Capital-Star.
According to a study published in PMC, property tax burdens on older Pennsylvania residents vary by county, with some rural and urban areas creating financial challenges for seniors who want to age in place.Â
Mastriano represents Franklin and Adams counties in the Pennsylvania Senate. He served 30 years in the U.S. Army and has led legislative committees focused on veterans’ affairs and local government, according to his official website.
