Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward and Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman said on May 13 that communication processes are being reviewed after members of the General Assembly were targeted with threats.
The issue is important because it highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of public officials and the effectiveness of threat response protocols. Recent incidents have increased attention to how quickly lawmakers are informed about potential dangers.
“It is past time to set aside the extremism of a mindset of violence against those who serve the rule of law. With public officials facing increased threats both in Pennsylvania and across the nation, they must always be on high alert. The safety of our members is our top priority and thankfully everyone is unharmed, but there were delays in communicating the threats to targeted legislators. As a result, the communication processes between the Pennsylvania State Police and the Sergeants-at-Arms in the House and Senate chambers are currently under review and being updated to ensure legislators are immediately contacted and made aware of any threat as we would have expected to have occurred,” Ward and Pittman said in their statement.
Pittman serves as Senate Majority Leader representing communities in Armstrong, Indiana, Jefferson, and Westmoreland counties; he promotes equal policy consideration for rural, urban, and suburban communities while focusing on job creation, infrastructure enhancements, law enforcement backing, fiscal accountability, energy strategy policies, resource management initiatives, and maintains district offices throughout his area according to the official website.
The review comes amid growing national concern over political violence targeting elected officials. Lawmakers hope updated procedures will improve safety measures moving forward.
