The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has issued a warning to consumers regarding Sunshine Dairy brand raw milk due to potential Listeria contamination. The department advises that any raw milk purchased between August 5 and August 15, 2025, in Berks, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties should be discarded immediately.
Routine testing confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the milk samples. The contaminated milk was sold in plastic gallon containers from the farm located at 9400 Old Route 22 in Bethel, Berks County. It was also available at three retail locations: Swatty Creek Farms on Lancaster Avenue in Myerstown, Shady Breeze Farm-Corn Crib on PA-419 in Myerstown, and The Farm Store on E. Norwegian St in Pottsville.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, an illness with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. It poses a higher risk to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, it can cause severe complications including miscarriage or stillbirth.
No illnesses have been reported related to this product so far. Consumers who have consumed the milk are advised to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.
For further information about raw milk consumption risks, individuals can visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its efforts through food safety inspection services to ensure consumer safety across the state.
