Philadelphia Union II secured a comeback victory over Atlanta United 2 on May 24 at Kinetic Field at the WSFS Bank Sportsplex.
The match saw Atlanta take an early lead in the fifth minute when Arif Kovac scored off an assist from Mohamed Cisset. Philadelphia Union II responded with pressure but were unable to equalize before halftime, as goalkeeper George Marks made several key saves and defenders Oliver Pratt and Óscar BenÃtez disrupted Atlanta’s attacks.
Union II began the second half with determination, finding the equalizer three minutes after play resumed. Academy midfielder Matheus De Paula scored his first professional goal after following up his own header that was initially saved by Atlanta’s Jonathan Ransom. Building on this momentum, midfielders Giovanny Sequera and Mamoutou Berthé created additional chances for Philadelphia. The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when Academy forward Theo Reed netted the game-winning goal, assisted by defender Jordan Griffin and midfielder Willyam Ferreira. In stoppage time, Marks continued to deliver crucial saves—totaling six for the match—to secure all three points for Union II.
Philadelphia Union functions as a professional soccer team in Major League Soccer, focused on representing the city in elite competition while fostering fan involvement, youth programs and community ties, according to the official website. The club’s facilities include Subaru Park—a soccer-specific stadium located on a waterfront site in Chester—along with a training center and multiple practice fields.
Looking ahead, Philadelphia Union II will travel north of the border next week to face Toronto FC II at York Lions Stadium on Friday, May 29th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
