A Pittsburgh resident has been sentenced to nine and a half years in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, as well as violating the terms of his federal supervised release. The announcement was made by First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti.
Gerald Underwood, 44, received the sentence from United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan after being found guilty on June 10, 2025, following a jury trial. The sentence includes eight years for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, with an additional consecutive 18-month term for violating supervised release.
Court documents indicate that on November 9, 2022, Underwood was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition at a gas station in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood while he was already under federal supervision for another firearms conviction. He also has multiple state felony convictions and two prior federal convictions related to firearms offenses. Federal law bars individuals with felony convictions from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.
Before issuing the sentence, Judge Horan said that Underwood “has a history of violent behavior and had not learned from the prior sentences,” adding that she chose to impose “a sentence above the advisory sentencing range because of the need to protect the public from Underwood.”
The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Shaun E. Sweeney.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Rivetti recognized both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for their efforts in investigating this case.
