The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to play the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with Game 1 scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena, according to an April 16 announcement. The matchup revives a longstanding rivalry between the two teams, which last met in the postseason in 2018.

The significance of this series is heightened by both teams’ recent performances and histories. The Penguins have consistently competed in the National Hockey League playoffs and earned numerous division titles according to their official website. They also form a vital part of Pittsburgh’s sports culture with strong fan traditions and community ties according to their official website.

Players on both sides acknowledged the intensity surrounding this renewed “Battle of PA.” Connor Clifton said, “I think it’ll be a great series. I mean, obviously battle of PA, a little history there. I think it’s a good matchup for us. I’m sure Sid is licking his chops.” Team captain Sidney Crosby reflected on his own experience with the rivalry: “With the divisions, you’re going to end up playing somebody you’re familiar with. With it being as much of a rivalry as it is… I think it’s great for everybody, it’s good for the fans, for the guys on both teams to be a part of it.”

Both rosters feature new talent since their last playoff meeting. Ben Kindel and Porter Martone were drafted by Pittsburgh and Philadelphia respectively at the 2025 NHL Draft and are preparing for their first playoff appearance. Kindel said, “It’s hard to believe. Obviously, not expecting to make it to the NHL in my first year… But then to make the playoffs, on top of that, I’m just so grateful for that.” Kris Letang commented on Martone’s impact: “A lot of skill… They have that new addition (Porter) Martone. He’s already making a big impact in their lineup.”

Coaching adds another layer; Rick Tocchet now leads Philadelphia after previously playing and coaching for Pittsburgh during championship runs. Crosby remarked about Tocchet: “Obviously, I have a ton of respect for Tocc… But it’s playoff hockey, and you got to go out there and compete.”

The games will take place at PPG Paints Arena—a multipurpose venue located downtown—which serves as home ice for Pittsburgh according to their official website. The organization has been recognized over time thanks largely due Hall-of-Fame players coaches executives who contributed significantly according to their official website.

Looking ahead, both teams anticipate an intense series fueled by passionate fan bases from each city. Erik Karlsson summed up expectations: “I’ve never played against Philly in the playoffs before… It’s going to be fun. I think on both sides of it you’re going be hated just as much as you are going be loved.” Fenway Sports Group currently owns and operates business operations for Pittsburgh according to their official website.
