Sam Podnar, a graduating senior from Pittsburgh, has focused her college years on community advocacy and engaging in conversations to better her city, according to an April 23 announcement. Podnar, who majors in politics and philosophy at the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and David C. Frederick Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh, said that connecting with people often starts by “knocking on their front door.” She has led canvassing efforts and voter registration drives for various campaigns.
Podnar’s dedication to public service earned her a Harry S. Truman Scholarship in 2025 for her work with organizations such as College Democrats at Pitt and internships with Pennsylvania Rep. Dan Miller, U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio, and former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey.
Reflecting on her time at the university, Podnar said she values listening to others’ experiences: “I ask myself every single day, ‘What do you have to learn from everybody else?'” She credits classes taught by Brock Bahler in the Department of Religious Studies for helping broaden her perspective: “With Dr. Bahler, I explored the philosophy of race and religion… His classes completely shaped my worldview.” Bahler said Podnar’s public service experience strengthened her academic pursuits: “She understands how what we think or believe has real-life implications, and she brings that knowledge into the classroom.”
In addition to being a Truman Scholar, Podnar is also a Stamps Scholar—receiving a full-ride scholarship for Pennsylvania residents demonstrating leadership—and was awarded fellowships including the William J. Keefe Congressional Fellowship and Martinson Award for study abroad opportunities.
This year she participated in the Elsie Hillman Honors Scholars Program through which she worked with Allegheny Intermediate Unit developing resources for early intervention education programs. Executive Director Bob Scherrer praised her contributions: “Sam is an impressive young woman who brings curiosity and insight to her work… she has a remarkable ability to translate that care into meaningful action.” After graduation, Podnar will serve as a community affairs liaison in Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor’s office.
Podnar acknowledged support from family members as well as mentors Lesha Greene and Michael Meyer during her studies: “Family, friends, professors, peers… have propelled and encouraged me every step of the way.”
