PPL Electric Utilities marked National Electrical Safety Month on May 4 by urging customers to prioritize electrical safety at home. The company said that focusing on safe practices can help prevent fires, injuries, and property damage.
National Electrical Safety Month serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with electricity and the importance of simple preventive measures. According to PPL Electric Utilities, electrical home structure fires are responsible for thousands of incidents each year.
Christine Martin, president of PPL Electric Utilities, said, “Safety is fundamental to our role as an electric utility and to the trust our communities place in us. By operating and maintaining the system safely — and by helping customers understand electrical risks at home — we can reduce hazards and help keep our communities safe.”
The company encourages residents to inspect their homes for potential hazards such as overloaded extension cords or faulty wiring. Customers are advised not to overload extension cords or use damaged ones, recognize warning signs like flickering lights or buzzing outlets, practice caution with power tools near water or live wires, maintain working smoke alarms throughout their homes, and observe outdoor safety precautions including calling 811 before digging.
Doug Haupt, manager of Public Safety at PPL Electric Utilities, said, “Safety is more than a commitment at PPL Electric – it’s a value that is rooted in everything we do. Whether it’s theater performances for children, running a traveling safety exhibit for first responders or providing tips like these, the company remains committed to making sure these messages make it into minds and homes across its 29 counties.”
To assist customers further in ensuring household safety from electrical hazards, PPL Electric has created a downloadable checklist available at pplelectric.com/blog. The company delivers electricity to about 1.5 million homes and businesses in eastern and central Pennsylvania.
