Rep. Scott Barger announced on May 8 that he will host two free document-shredding events this month to help residents protect themselves from identity theft.

These events aim to give community members a secure way to dispose of sensitive documents and reduce the risk of personal information being stolen by scammers or fraudsters.

“Scammers and fraudsters are always looking for ways to steal personal information,” Barger said. “By participating in either of my events, you can shred old and out-of-date documents to better protect yourself and your personal information. These events help keep your finances and your future secure.”

The first shredding event is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Legion Park. The second event will take place on Thursday, May 21, also from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Loyal Gaming Rewards (the former Rite-Aid). Each household may bring up to four boxes of materials; businesses are not eligible for this service. Burgmeier’s industrial shredder will be available onsite at both locations and can process items with staples or paper clips, but binder clips must be removed beforehand.

Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items or toiletries for donation to a human services organization during the event. Those seeking more information can contact Barger’s Hollidaysburg office at 814-695-2398.
