PennDOT District 11 has announced that road improvement work is currently taking place on Route 8 (Butler Street) in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. Motorists should expect single-lane restrictions between the 62nd Street Bridge and Baker Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights through late July. Weekend work will also occur as necessary.

Milling and paving operations are set to begin on Monday night, June 16. The $9.14 million project, which began in August 2024, spans the City of Pittsburgh, Etna Borough, and Shaler Township. It includes milling and resurfacing, retaining wall repairs, and installing a barrier for a future shared-use path.

The northern section of the project extends between the 62nd Street Bridge and Saxonburg Boulevard, focusing on concrete pavement restoration and preservation on two structures over Pine Creek. Additional tasks include sign and signal upgrades, guide rail updates, drainage work, ADA curb ramp updates, pavement markings/delineation installation, and other miscellaneous construction.

Most of the work will be done under short-term single-lane closures during off-peak daylight hours as well as overnight and weekend periods. However, there will be three separate one-way detours of the 62nd Street Bridge in 2025, along with a weekend detour at Saxonburg Boulevard’s intersection with Route 8 and another detour for reconstructing the ramp carrying Route 28 southbound traffic onto northbound Route 8.

The project is expected to conclude by late 2025. Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com or using the smartphone application available for iPhone and Android devices.
